Renthal was formed in 1969 by friends Andrew Renshaw and Henry Rosenthal. Both bike enthusiasts they decided to begin making handlebars based upon a prototype Henry had made some years earlier for his trials bike. The bars made from H14 aircraft aluminium left over from world war two had worked well, being much stronger than the original steel bars they replaced (in fact they broke the bending machine whilst being formed).
With a great deal of effort they managed to make their own specialist tube bender and with a supply of tube small-scale production began. Making motorcycle handlebars was at this stage a part time job whilst Andrew completed his degree in mechanical engineering and Henry did business studies. At this time Renthal only made handlebars for the trials market but soon realised that there was a larger market in Motocross and with an increase in sales, full time production began in 1975.
The company continued to grow alongside the demand for its products with Andrew taking responsibility for engineering duties whilst Henry pushed the commercial side of the company. By the early Nineties, having been told that no European company could make it in America, the largest motorcycle market opened up for Renthal and the company reached a whole new level. Renthal now employ more than 60 production staff and retail in 42 countries worldwide.
In October 2000 the company suffered a huge set back when the factory was destroyed by fire. However just one year later Renthal was able to open a brand new, purpose built manufacturing facility to house all the design, development and manufacturing of its products. The 41,000 sq ft facility is dedicated to the manufacture of Renthal motorcycle parts and utilises the most state of the art equipment available.
In 2004, Renthal added to its list of records, becoming the first aluminium handlebar to be fitted as OE on a Japanese motorcycle, possibly one of the highest accolades a company could receive.
Most riders know that Renthal make the best handlebars in the world. From the incredibly strong double-skinned TwinWall, through the braceless taper wall Fatbar, to the original 7/8” handlebar Renthal has been the popular choice of off road riders the world over for years. But what about sprockets, or chainwheels as the people at Renthal prefer to call them.
Renthal front chainwheels are made from a case-hardened and core-refined 655M13 Nickel-Chrome-Molybdenum alloy steel, to give the ultimate combination of strength and hardness. Available in Standard or Ultralite designs, they are precision manufactured to retain maximum strength, with minimum weight.
Renthal rear chainwheels are precision manufactured to extremely tight tolerances from a special material designed to withstand the rigours of Supercross, Motocross, Enduro, Trials and Superbike racing. Renthal’s 7075T651 aluminium alloy rear chainwheels are 30% the weight of steel, yet incredibly durable. Their advanced tooth profile, concentricity and accuracy of fit provide maximum power transfer and long life. Renthal rear chainwheels are also available in Hard Anodised finish, an integral surface coating, which significantly increases the hardness and wear resistance of the chainwheel surface. Renthal’s combination of a very high strength base material and an exceptionally hardwearing surface result in significantly improved chainwheel life.
The Texas Tornado snatched the 2002 World Superbike Championship from the clutches of Troy Bayliss riding Honda's SP-2, taking the title for the second time. He moved into MotoGP with Aprilia, then went to Honda and is now right up there as Valentino Rossi's teammate at Yamaha.
six times AMA Supercross champion. McGrath is an icon in the States. He is the only rider in history to win the AMA National Supercross title six times, managing to stand on the top of the podium 74 times.
Multiple World Indoor and Outside World Trials Champion. Dougie is the most sucessful British trials rider in history, recently overtaking Jordi Tarres' record of six world championships. He was awarded an MBE for his services to motorcycle sport in 2000.
